Classify common Utah Rocks

Sedimentary Rocks
Conglomerate - made when gravel sized sediment is cemented together.


Sandstone - made when sand sized sediment is cemented together.

Shale - made when silt sized sediment is cemented together.

Igneous Rocks

Basalt - made when lava foams out of a fissure, usually on the ocean floor, and cools quickly.

Pumice - made when lava is mixed with boiling water and explodes violently out of a volcano.

Obidiasn - made when lava oozes out of a volcano and cools quickly.

Granite - made when magma cools slowly underground.

Metamorphic Rocks

Gneiss - made when a piece of granite is subjected to heat and pressure.

Marble - made when limestone is subjected to heat and pressure.


Slate - made when shale is subjected to heat and pressure.

Schist - made when slate is subjected to heat and pressure.
